The Ironwood, or Ostrya virginiana, is a slow growing, hardy, medium sized tree. In the summer, it produces hop-like fruits. The Ironwood can grow up to 30 to 50 feet and an average of 25 feet in width. This slowing moving tree will take up to 1500 years to reach its full growth. The color of the Ironwood in the summer is a bright-green color. Its fall foliage is golden yellow in color, making it a really nice accent to your yard during the fall months.

The Ironwood thrives in zones 3-8, meaning this tree can be found anywhere in the country, but most likely in the midwest and the southern states. The Ironwood is also drought resistant. This also gives a reason why it can be found in the southern parts of America, such as Texas and New Mexico. The Ironwood was the 2008, Great Plains Tree winner.
